In this guide, we’ll walk through how to create and install handmade shelves on an internal wall using RYOBI 18V tools, with practical tips that make the job easier, safer and far more accurate.
There’s something deeply satisfying about putting shelves on the wall that you’ve made yourself. It’s not just about storage — it’s about adding personality, function and a genuine sense of achievement to your space. That’s where curved, or wavy shelves go from practical to something special.
Watch Leyah’s video to see how she determined, and achieved, the shape of her wavy shelves. Once you’ve decided on the location and size of your shelves, it’s all about getting them attached to the wall.
Before picking up a drill, take a moment to plan. Shelf installation is one of those jobs where preparation saves you from extra holes, frustration and crooked results.
Key things to think about:
Laying out everything first ensures the install is clean and confident.
Using cordless tools makes shelf installation faster and far more flexible, especially indoors. Here are the tools we recommend, plus some essentials:
This is where accuracy really matters. Even your beautifully made shelves won’t look right if they’re not level and look ‘wonky’.
NOTE: Let’s assume you’re hanging shelves on a plasterboard wall with timber studs.
Start by:
A laser level can make the job much easier by lining up multiple shelves and keeping everything consistent.
TIP: A Stud Finder is designed to locate the studs easily without you having to guess where they are. If you’re planning on having a heavy shelf, you’ll need to plan around getting the brackets screwed into the studs.
EXTRA TIP: Make sure you avoid accidentally screwing into electrical wires or plumbing pipes behind the wall. A building contractor can help with this task if you’re unsure.
Strong fixings are non‑negotiable.
Depending on your wall:
Once the shelf fixing points are determined, mark them clearly and double‑check the alignment with the laser level before drilling.
TIP: Sometimes multiple shelves can look better not all left or right aligned. Experiment with staggering them or offsetting one or two.
With the layout confirmed, it’s time to drill.
Grab your RYOBI 18V Drill Driver to:
For tougher fixings, the RYOBI 18V Impact Driver made light work of driving screws securely without over‑tightening.
Once the fixings are in place, carefully mount each shelf.
Helpful tips here:
Taking your time at this stage ensures the shelves sit flush and feel solid.
After the shelves are up, one final check...

TIP: Styling the shelves gradually rather than overloading them really brings the project together and highlights the craftsmanship of the shelves themselves.
Installing shelves you’ve made yourself adds more than storage — it adds character.
